Music

Music is an intrinsic part of every society. Fostering a love and knowledge of music begins in preschool and continues into the junior high. Music classes emphasize basic music theory, including music vocabulary and techniques with a variety of instruments from the recorder to percussion instruments. Studies show that music programs help develop higher level brain activity which often translates to success in the classroom. In addition, musical knowledge gives students an additional avenue of self-expression.

Handbell and vocal choirs provide students in grades 5-8 with an interest in further developing their musical skills with an opportunity to do so. There is even a Praise Choir that grades 7-8 students may audition for which helps lead songs in chapel. These programs develops reading music, playing and breathing techniques, and showmanship. Students are exposed to handbells and vocal arrangements in the lower grades before being accepted into performing groups, giving them a foundation.

Students in grades 5-8 may also participate in instrumental bands at CLS, including a beginning band and an advanced band. Students learn to read music, play and care for their instruments, as well as to perform as a group for a variety of events.
